How to Wear a Teddy: 8 Styling Ideas for Every Occasion
As underwear. As outerwear. On a red-eye flight. On your honeymoon. A modern playbook for a piece more versatile than the internet gives it credit for.

The teddy has an image problem. Search "how to wear a teddy" and the results collapse into one of two clichés — the bedroom, or a music video. In reality, a well-cut teddy is one of the most flexible pieces in a modern wardrobe. Here are eight ways we actually wear ours.
1. Under a blazer, as a bodysuit
A structured teddy with a scoop or square neckline reads exactly like a lace bodysuit under an oversized blazer. Tuck the crotch closure well below the waistband of high-rise trousers and no one will know it's technically lingerie.
2. Layered under a slip dress
A slip dress in silk or satin is beautiful, but it can be unforgiving. A skin-tone or ivory teddy underneath smooths the silhouette and adds a layer of coverage without a visible bra strap.
3. Under an open silk robe (the classic)
The most photographed way to wear a teddy, for good reason: the robe frames the piece without upstaging it. Choose a robe that contrasts with the teddy — black lace teddy, ivory silk robe; or ivory lace teddy, deep burgundy robe.
4. As sleepwear
Skip the underwire versions and go for something soft — bamboo lace, cotton-modal blends, or a lightweight silk. A teddy is cooler than a full nightgown in summer and less rumpled in the morning than a matching pajama set.
5. On the honeymoon
A teddy in your carry-on takes up less space than a set and packs wrinkle-free. Ivory, blush, or a deep jewel tone photograph best in low light. Pack one for the wedding night and a second in a different silhouette for the rest of the trip.
6. As shapewear (yes, really)
A well-fitting teddy in a heavier stretch lace does about 70% of the smoothing a low-grade shapewear piece would do — with none of the visible seams. Not a replacement for real shapewear under a gown, but plenty for a slip dress.
7. On a long-haul flight
A soft, unlined teddy in stretch mesh under a matching set of loungewear is what fashion editors have been quietly wearing for years. No bra hooks digging in against the seat, no waistband pinching when you sleep sideways.
8. On your own, in a mirror, on a Tuesday
The most underrated way to wear a teddy is entirely for yourself. We say this without irony: putting on a nice piece of lingerie under an ordinary outfit is one of the smallest, cheapest wardrobe upgrades in the world.
What to pair with what
As a rule: keep the teddy the "detailed" piece and let everything else be plain. Lace teddy + silk robe in a solid color. Structured teddy + tailored blazer with clean lines. If the outer layer is loud, the teddy should be quiet — and vice versa.
