Teddy vs Babydoll: What's the Difference?

One is a fitted one-piece that hugs the body; the other is a short, flowy slip. Here's how to pick the right silhouette for your body and the occasion.

Teddies and babydolls sit next to each other on every lingerie rack, and the internet uses the names almost interchangeably. They're not the same piece. Here's the working definition we use.

The short answer

A teddy is a one-piece that follows the body from bust to hip, ending at a snap-crotch closure. A babydoll is a loose, short slip — fitted at the bust, then flaring out and ending at the upper thigh, usually worn with separate panties.

Where they diverge

Silhouette. Teddy: fitted, second-skin, like a lace bodysuit. Babydoll: A-line, swingy, floats away from the stomach.

Coverage. A teddy covers from bust to crotch in one continuous piece. A babydoll covers the bust and drapes down — the tummy and hips are hidden by fabric flow, not compression.

Fabric. Teddies are stretch lace, mesh, and satin. Babydolls lean on chiffon, sheer mesh, and lightweight silk, because the piece needs to fall and move.

Bottoms. A teddy has its own built-in bottom (usually a thong or brief cut with snaps). A babydoll almost always comes with a matching G-string or is sold to be worn with your own.

When to buy which

Choose a teddy if you want a piece that shows the body's shape — narrow waist, defined hips, a lace line down the leg. Choose a babydoll if you want coverage through the midsection while keeping the bust and legs on display. Post-baby, bloated day, or just prefer flow over compression: babydoll every time.

The bottom line

Fitted one-piece with a snap crotch → teddy. Loose short slip with separate panties → babydoll. If a listing says "babydoll" but the piece has a snap closure and hugs the hips, it's mislabeled — it's a teddy.
